Passionate about inspiring others

An award-winning actor, director, and coach — and a teacher first.

Art Cohan has worked for over forty years in New York and Los Angeles across theatre, film, and television. As a teacher, he has focused that lifetime of craft toward the three things that decide an actor’s career: auditioning, script analysis, and scene study.

Who Art Is

A no-holds-barred teacher for actors who mean it.

For more than two decades, Art has been a teacher and Dean at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. He trained directly with Stella Adler and Milton Katselas — serving as executive assistant to both — and built from that lineage an approach entirely his own.

Through years of working inside the industry, Art teaches his students to pair real craft with the business savvy a lasting career requires.

His no-holds-barred style empowers the actor to refuse the limitation of imitation — and discover the endless imagination of the artist within.

The Work

Three things happen in the room.

Art’s focus is always the same: find the truth of the character in the given circumstances of the script, and serve the story being told.

Act I

The truth of the character

Discover who this person is inside the given circumstances of the scene — honestly, specifically, and in service of the story.

Act II

Breaking down the script

Auditions demand more than bold choices; they demand analysis. Whether it’s an under-five co-star or a multi-scene guest star, Art defines the nuts and bolts of the scene so you bring the absolute maximum.

Act III

Private coaching, when you need it

One-on-one work for the audition in front of you or the career behind it — in person or virtually, from beginner through master.

Many of his students credit him with changing their life — as a person as well as a performer.

I turned to this class because I hadn’t booked anything in over a year. The techniques and Art’s feedback made such a huge difference — before the class was even over I’d booked a feature film with an Academy Award-winning actress.
